04/07/25 (Agence Europe) – Packaging recycling in Italy reached 76.7% in 2024, declared the Italian National Packaging Consortium (Conai), on Wednesday 2 July, based on its own data. This 76.7% represents the recycling of just over 10 million tonnes of packaging and packaging waste out of a total of almost 14 million tonnes. Conai boasts a membership of 7,400 municipalities, thanks to an agreement signed with the National Association of Italian Municipalities (ANCI). The organisation pointed out that “much remains to be done” in “certain regions of Italy”. it declared that in 2024, the plastics industry had “finally surpassed the 50% recycling threshold required by the EU for 2025”. Financed by member companies, Conai runs seven consortia - steel (Ricrea), aluminium (Cial), paper/cardboard (Comieco), wood (Rilegno), plastics (Corepla), bioplastics (Biorepack) and glass (Coreve) - providing “the necessary link between these consortia and the public administration”.
