On Thursday 19 June, the European Commission launched a public consultation and a call for evidence on the next ‘Citizens Energy Package’, due for completion by the end of 2025.
Following on from the Commission’s action plan for affordable energy prices (see EUROPE 13588/3), this package aims to enable citizens, as individuals or communities, to play an active part in speeding up the transition to cleaner energy sources, while ensuring a fair transition.
In particular, it focuses on energy poverty and support for the decarbonisation of coal-mining regions in transition.
The Commission also recognises that “the lack of engagement of citizens and consumers in the energy market (...) hinders the uptake of innovative energy services and energy and cost saving solutions”.
It states that the future package “will bring together in a single policy document the various actions and initiatives underway on consumer rights and the fair transition in order to ensure coherence and visibility”, but will not include any new legislative proposals.
The consultation and call will run for 12 weeks, until 11 September.
