12/05/2025 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 8 May, the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Climate Action (DG CLIMA) renewed its commitment to cooperating with the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) to support the EU’s climate policies and “global leadership” in climate action. The Director General of DG CLIMA, Kurt Vandenberghe, emphasised the essential role of EUMETSAT “in understanding, monitoring, mitigating and adapting to climate change”, and thus informing the implementation of climate policies and legislation. “Extreme weather events have cost European countries between 450 and 520 billion euros and at least 85,000 lives over the four decades from 1980 to 2020”, said Phil Evans, Director General of EUMETSAT, emphasising the contribution of the organisation’s data to making Member States more resilient.
