24/04/2025 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 23 April, the European Commission adopted a measure amending the Vessel Monitoring Directive (2022/59/EC), with a view to enhancing maritime safety and environmental protection along the EU’s coasts. This new delegated directive updates the Mandatory Ship Reporting Systems, now requiring all ships, including those that only pass through EU waters without entering a port, to provide insurance information. This increases the EU’s ability to monitor and, if necessary, investigate maritime activities, and to address the risks posed by uninsured or unsafe vessels. The Commission and the Member States have submitted to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) a proposal for minor changes to several existing reporting systems in and around European coastal states.
