If Europe does not lead, others will shape the global order in its place”, warns Reinhold Brender

In a paper published on Thursday 24 April by the independent Belgian think-tank ‘Egmont’, international relations expert, Reinhold Brender, recommends six political priorities to enable the European Union to strengthen its security through sustainability in an increasingly unstable geopolitical context.

Mr Brender believes that Europe’s long-term security depends not only on its military strength, but also on global stability, shaped by sustainable development and effective multilateralism.

The erosion of multilateral norms, combined with systemic shocks—from climate disruption to mass displacement—is generating new threats that no army alone can deter” says this former EU official. “If Europe does not lead, others will shape the global order in its place”, he warns.

Recommended measures include: – Implementing the UN’s Pact for the Future; – innovative and coordinated funding for global sustainability; – developing a new partnership strategy with the ‘Global South’; – optimising the Global Gateway initiative; – redefining the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals beyond 2030; – strengthening strategic communications to “win the battle of narratives”.
