24/04/2025 (Agence Europe) – In a study presented to the European Parliament’s Committee on Development (DEVE) on Thursday 24 April, researchers Aitor Pérez, Lisa Butler and Martiño Rubal Maseda conclude that traditional international aid mechanisms, namely Official Development Assistance (ODA), should be maintained and strengthened in order to meet development objectives in the poorest countries. The study, commissioned by the DEVE Commission, aimed to consolidate existing knowledge on the impact of ODA in achieving internationally agreed human development goals, particularly in the areas of health, education and the eradication of extreme poverty. The authors conclude that “the evidence reviewed in this paper indicates that the people left behind in human development would benefit from continuing or increasing ODA in line with previous development cooperation practices”.
