02/04/2025 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 2 April, the European Commission announced an air bridge operation to help victims of the earthquake that devastated parts of Myanmar and Thailand, killing more than 1,600 people, according to provisional estimates. It announced the release of €3 million in humanitarian aid. On Wednesday, a plane took off from Copenhagen for Rangoon with 80 tonnes of supplies (tents, sanitation and first aid kits) to be delivered to UNICEF. Following the UN’s activation of the EU’s Civil Protection Mechanism, a team of 12 European experts will be deployed to Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur to deliver aid to those affected. The European Commission is calling for humanitarian aid to be delivered unhindered and for the safety of aid workers to be ensured. The Copernicus satellite service has been mobilised to help assess the impact of the natural disaster. (MB)
