European citizens would like to travel and book trips online more seamlessly, according to Eurobarometer survey

According to a Eurobarometer survey published by the European Commission on Tuesday 1 April, more and more Europeans would like to use multimodal travel and book online seamlessly.

The survey, conducted between 28 August and 4 September 2024, received responses from 25,805 EU citizens. It reveals that 36% of Europeans find it difficult to book tickets that combine different modes of transport, such as connections between plane and train or train and bus. 31% of respondents have not booked such trips because of the complexity of the booking process and the lack of clear, user-friendly options. For trains, 25% of respondents said they had encountered difficulties when booking tickets involving several operators.

The survey also shows that sustainable development remains a major concern for travellers, with 78% of those surveyed considering the environmental impact of their travel to be significant.

The Commission states that these results will feed into the preparatory work underway for the regulation on single digital booking and ticketing and the initiative on multimodal digital mobility services (see EUROPE B1358310).
