In an open letter published earlier this week, twelve associations from Europe’s digital sector urge the Commission to produce a final text of the Code of Practice for General-Purpose AI (GPAI) Models that is “balanced, effective and pragmatic”.
The third version of the Code represents “an encouraging - but still insufficient - step in the right direction”, they write. The current version is still too cumbersome in terms of reporting obligations and risks “entangling the AI value chain in an additional layer of complexity”.
They believe that the next and final version of the Code must absolutely align with the “carefully crafted balance” of the AI Act, and want the “legal uncertainty for modifiers of GPAI models” to be “urgently addressed”.
The third version of the Code has been the subject of much criticism since its publication, particularly from rightsholder associations concerned about the protection of artistic works and transparency obligations (see EUROPE 13610/3).
Reporters Without Borders announced on Wednesday 2 April that it was withdrawing from discussions on the Code (see other news).
