Since Monday 24 March, users of Meta’s services in 41 European countries have been able to benefit from new artificial intelligence tools in several applications, including WhatsApp and Instagram.
Announced last week, these new functions are making their appearance in Europe a year and a half after they were rolled out in the United States, following friction between the American company and European regulations.
Last August, the company suspended its plans to develop artificial intelligence tools on its applications in Europe, after receiving several complaints, mainly against its intention to use users’ personal data to train its models (see EUROPE 13433/12).
“It’s taken longer than we would have liked to get our AI technology into the hands of people in Europe as we continue to navigate its complex regulatory system - but we’re glad we’re finally here”, the company said in a statement.
Bound by the rules of the Digital Services Act, Meta must provide the European Commission with a risk assessment prior to the deployment of new functionalities in the EU.
At this stage, the Commission has stated that it has not yet received any information, but is waiting to access the details in order to assess how the DSA is applied to these new tools. (Original version in French by Isalia Stieffatre)
