12/02/2025 (Agence Europe) – In the final publication of its 2025 work programme (see other news), the European Commission has brought forward the publication date of its legislative proposal on the 2040 climate target to the first quarter, whereas a provisional document mentioned the second quarter (see EUROPE 13576/2). This proposal aims to amend the ‘European Climate Law’ to include an interim target of a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. The Commission had previously reiterated its intention to reach an interinstitutional agreement on this point before COP30 in Bélem (Brazil) in November (see EUROPE 13570/6). When questioned by Agence Europe, the institution declined to say whether its legislative proposal would be presented at the same time as the Clean Industrial Deal, on 26 February.
