Climate Action Network Europe calls on European Union to aim for climate neutrality by 2040

In the run-up to COP30, to be held in Belém, Brazil in November, the European Union has still not presented its new nationally determined contribution.

With the deadline set for this month, in an analysis published on Monday 10 February, the NGO coalition CAN Europe once again calls on the EU (see EUROPE 13345/19) to go beyond the 90% emissions reduction target proposed a year ago by the European Commission (see EUROPE 13344/1), and aim for climate neutrality by 2040.

According to the network, there should also be an ambitious intermediate target for 2035, with a gross reduction - i.e. the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions without taking into account natural or technological absorptions - of at least 82% of emissions, compared with the current inadequate trajectory of 66.25%.

CAN Europe is also calling for the accelerated elimination of fossil fuels: coal by 2030, gas by 2035 and oil by 2040, with a commitment to a 100% renewable system.

The publication also insists on a reduction target of at least 65% of gross emissions by 2030, instead of the current net 55%.
