Ursula von der Leyen calls for EU/NATO complementarity in protection of strategic infrastructures

10/02/2025 (Agence Europe)On Sunday 9 February, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, called for the security of strategic infrastructures to be strengthened, welcoming NATO's ‘Baltic Sentry’ initiative, patrols to deter further incidents against allied pipelines and submarine cables (see EUROPE 13557/2). There have been a number of incidents of damage to infrastructure in the Baltic in recent months. “Today more than ever, Europe and NATO must work in perfect harmony ", said Ms von der Leyen at the inauguration of the synchronisation of the networks (see other news). In her view, there are four priorities for securing critical network infrastructures: the first is prevention, by laying new cables and diversifying the risks; the second is detection, by improving early warning of suspicious activities around these cables; the third is of course a fast response and repair; and the fourth is deterrence, with consequences for these actions.
