European Commission could consider extending objectives for filling gas stocks beyond December 2025

24/01/2025 (Agence Europe)According to a Reuters report shared on Thursday 23 January, the EU could extend the targets for filling its gas stocks beyond December 2025. At present, the EU has set a general target of 90% of reservoirs filled by 1 November, with intermediate targets for achieving this target to ensure security of supply over the winter (see EUROPE 13535/5). Introduced in 2022 during the energy crisis, the EU regulation on gas storage (EU 2022/1032) was due to expire at the end of 2025. According to Reuters, the European Commission could propose an extension for at least another year, subject to the approval of EU Member States. It should be noted that EU gas stocks are currently being depleted faster than in 2023 and 2024. They are just below 58% of capacity, compared with almost 74% for the same period in 2024. (PLD)
