24/01/2025 (Agence Europe) – Sweden and Finland are failing to meet their commitments to protect their primary forests under the ‘European Green Deal’ and the EU Biodiversity Strategy, according to a new WWF report published on Thursday 23 January. According to the report, both countries are using legal loopholes to exploit forest areas that are supposed to be safeguarded. “This cannot continue if we are serious about tackling the climate and biodiversity crises”, said Mai Suominen, Forest Expert at WWF Finland. A few days ahead of a European Commission workshop on old-growth forest conservation on 27 and 28 January, WWF is calling on the Commission to ensure that the EU Biodiversity Strategy is effectively implemented at national level.
