14/01/25 (Agence Europe) – The European Parliament’s Committee on Agriculture has organised a debate, scheduled for 30 January, with the two commissioners concerned on the trade agreement between the EU and the Mercosur countries, the negotiations for which were concluded at the end of 2024 (see EUROPE 13543/19). European Commissioner for Trade Maroš Šefčovič and European Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Christophe Hansen will be answering questions from members of Parliament’s Agriculture Committee, who are highly critical of this agreement. On 6 January, French President Emmanuel Macron stated that “the die had not been cast” regarding the EU-Mercosur agreement’s entry into force. “We will continue to defend the consistency of our commitments, and therefore [a] consistent trade policy”, he hammered home to the French ambassadors gathered at the Élysée Palace.
