To strengthen European competitiveness and environmental ambition, Europe Jacques Delors calls for massive investment

If it wants to remain competitive, the European Union must opt for an industrial transformation in the face of the climate emergency. This is what the Europe Jacques Delors think tank stated in an article published on 10 January and originally published in SERVIR magazine in November 2024.

In their article, Geneviève Pons, Director General and Vice-President of the think tank, and Elena Schneider, political analyst, respond to the guidelines set out by Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, who had announced a ‘Clean Industrial Deal’ to be drawn up in the first hundred days of her new mandate.

In view of the many issues at stake, such as reducing emissions by 55% by 2030, strengthening strategic autonomy in the face of critical imports and promoting innovation, massive investment, coupled with administrative simplification and constructive dialogue between political, industrial and civic players, should be put in place.

The EU therefore needs to combine ecological ambition with economic competitiveness, within a stable framework, both to support the transition of its industries and to consolidate its role as a leader in clean technologies.
