In 2023, the EU’s greenhouse gas emissions totalled 3.4 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalents, a 7% decrease compared with 2022 and 18% reduction compared with 2013, Eurostat reported on Monday 13 January.
Between 2013 and 2023, the production of electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning saw the biggest drop (-43%). The transport and storage sector is the only one to emit more, with an increase of 14% in 2023 compared with 2013.
Emissions from households, meanwhile, fell by 14%, while emissions from the transport and storage sector rose by 14% compared with 2013.
Emissions intensity, which measures CO2 emissions per unit of gross value added in a given economy, fell by 32% between 2013 and 2023, reflecting a simultaneous 19% increase in the EU’s economic value added.
Over this period, Estonia (-61%), Ireland (-50%) and Slovenia (-41%) achieved the greatest reductions in emissions intensity.
