Richest 1% use up their annual carbon quota in first ten days of 2025, says Oxfam

10/01/2025 (Agence Europe)A new analysis by Oxfam, published on Friday 10 January, shows that the richest 1% have used up the amount of CO2 that can be added to the atmosphere without exceeding 1.5°C of global warming in the first 10 days of 2025. In comparison, a person from the poorest half of the world’s population will use up their share of the annual global carbon budget in almost three years (1,022 days). Oxfam points out that the richest 1% are responsible for more than twice as much carbon pollution as the poorest half of humanity. The organisation is calling on governments to “introduce permanent income and wealth taxes on the top 1 percent” or “ban or punitively tax carbon-intensive luxury consumptions”.
