Joseph Aoun’s election marks a moment of hope and renewal, according to EU

On behalf of the EU, the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, “warmly” congratulated Joseph Aoun on his election as President of the Republic of Lebanon on the evening of Thursday 9 January, saying that this “significant” step marked a “moment of hope and renewal” for the Lebanese people (see EUROPE 13554/21).

In her statement, Ms Kallas congratulated the Lebanese parliamentarians on reaching a broad consensus, thereby demonstrating their responsibility. “A spirit of national unity is crucial to allow the participation of all citizens, across all components of society, to overcoming the aftermath of recent conflicts, advancing reconstruction efforts, and embarking on a path of political stabilisation and socio-economic recovery”, she said.

Reaffirming the EU’s unwavering support for the Lebanese people, the High Representative reiterated that the EU looked forward to the swift formation of a fully-fledged government capable of implementing a forward-looking reform programme. “This will pave the way for renewed international support and for the full relaunch of the EU-Lebanon partnership”, promised Ms Kallas.

Mr Aoun has pledged to rapidly launch consultations with a view to appointing a Prime Minister.

The European Commissioner for Preparedness, Crisis Management and Equality, Hadja Lahbib, announced that she will be visiting Lebanon in the coming months to discuss the EU’s humanitarian commitment. “Together, we will work for the prosperity and security of the region”, she stressed. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
