After sending preliminary conclusions to Apple in September, in the context of the two specification procedures (see EUROPE 13486/25), on Thursday 19 December the European Commission opened a call for contributions to ensure that the proposed measures ensure effective interoperability under the Digital Markets Act (DMA).
The conclusions sent out on 19 September detail the measures that Apple should implement to comply effectively with its interoperability obligations under the DMA.
“Under the Digital Markets Act, Apple must provide free and effective interoperability to third-party developers and companies with the hardware and software functionalities controlled by Apple’s iOS and iPadOS operating systems, designated under the DMA”, explains the Commission.
To ensure that the measures it is proposing are appropriate, the Commission launched two public consultations on Thursday 19 December.
The first concerns “relevant measures for connected devices seeking interoperability with iOS” (smartwatches, headsets and virtual reality headsets). The second concerns Apple’s process for handling interoperability requests submitted by developers and third parties for iOS and iPadOS.
Interested parties, including Apple, have until 9 January 2025 to submit their views on each of the two sets of measures.
