19/12/2024 (Agence Europe) – The Council of the European Union formally adopted the draft regulation on packaging and packaging waste at the Energy Council on Monday 16 December. The regulation will come into force eighteen months after its publication in the Official Journal of the EU, in the coming weeks. The new rules include packaging reduction targets (5% by 2030, 10% by 2035 and 15% by 2040) and require Member States to reduce plastic packaging waste in particular. From 2030, 100% of packaging must be designed to be recyclable, or risk being banned from the market. This packaging will have to be recycled EU-wide by 2035. In addition, the EU will ban certain packaging containing PFAS above certain thresholds when in contact with food. Pizza boxes in particular will be affected. (FS)
