19/12/24 (Agence Europe) –
On Tuesday 17 December, five environmental and animal protection organisations said that they had brought an action before the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) against the change in the wolf’s protection status from “strictly protected species” to “protected species”, adopted by the Standing Committee of the Bern Convention of the Council of Europe on Tuesday 3 December. Green Impact (Italy), Earth (Italy), One Voice (France), LNDC Animal Protection (Italy) and Great Lakes and Wetlands (Hungary) point to an irregularity in the procedure, as the European Commission did not wait for the 60-day suspension period following publication in the Official Journal of the EU on 10 October before submitting its proposal to the Standing Committee of the Bern Convention in early December.
