17/12/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 17 December, the European Commission launched a review of the operation of its steel safeguard measure, which is in force until 30 June 2026. In November, it received a request from 13 Member States who believe that demand for steel has contracted even further since the last review and that the tariff quotas in force are no longer necessarily relevant. The Commission considers that the request contains sufficient evidence to open an investigation. In recent months, several countries and representatives of the European steel industry have also asked the Commission to consider a solution for the period after June 2026, as the safeguard measure cannot be extended beyond this date.
