In its report published on Tuesday 17 December, the European Commission has drawn up a roadmap to help ports, particularly small and medium size ones, to adopt sustainable practices while complying with regulatory requirements and contributing to broader environmental goals.
This study identified the factors affecting the capacity for greening European seaports – with a focus on small and medium size ports – alongside economic development. It also examined the legal framework governing environmental protection in the EU, focusing on recent initiatives. The roadmap is divided into three main areas of intervention: policy and target setting, measure assessment and prioritisation, and monitoring and reporting.
Among the avenues mentioned, the European Commission recommends establishing partnerships with local stakeholders; broader agreements on green port practices would seem to encourage their adoption and implementation. Regional cooperation also appears to play a decisive role in the implementation of ecological practices.
