EESC calls for legal mechanisms to be explored to neutralise Energy Charter Treaty’s survival clause

In an opinion adopted on Wednesday 4 and published on Tuesday 10 December, the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) approved the adoption by the EU of the agreement on the interpretation and application of the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT) between the EU, Euratom and the Member States of these entities, but called for the clause protecting investment in fossil fuels for 20 years after the effective withdrawal from the ECT to be neutralised.
