11/12/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 10 December, Chiara Martinelli, Director of the CAN Europe network, , sent a series of recommendations to the 27 European Environment and Climate Ministers in preparation for the Environment Council on 17 December. Calling on Member States and the EU to align their climate ambitions with the Paris Agreement objective of limiting global warming to 1.5°C, Mrs Martinelli said that the target of a 90% net reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, compared with 1990 emissions, was insufficient to comply with the Paris Agreement. For 2040, for example, CAN Europe is calling on the EU to focus on gross emissions reductions, net carbon dioxide sequestration in the land use sector and permanent industrial carbon dioxide removals. CAN Europe is also calling on the Member States to “step up their national action between now and 2030”. (FS)
