11/12/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 11 December, the Committee of Permanent Representatives (Coreper I) approved the European Court of Auditors’ special report on adaptation to climate change in the European Union. The report, published on 16 October (see EUROPE 13505/15), points out that the EU’s adaptation policies are in danger of failing to keep up with the accelerating pace of climate change, exacerbated by extreme events such as droughts and floods. The Court points out that the economic losses caused by these phenomena average €26 billion a year. The audit identified shortcomings in the national adaptation strategies, including the use of outdated data and underestimation of costs. The Court recommends improving reporting on adaptation and ensuring that EU-funded projects take account of current and future climate conditions. To see the report: https://aeur.eu/f/dx2 (NP)
