GDP growth confirmed at 0.4% in euro area

In the third quarter, seasonally adjusted GDP rose by 0.4% in both the euro area and the European Union, compared with the previous quarter, according to a flash estimate published by Eurostat, the EU’s statistical office.

In the second quarter of 2024, GDP rose by 0.2% in both zones.

Ireland (+3.5%) recorded the strongest increase in GDP, followed by Denmark and Lithuania (both +1.2%). The highest decreases were seen in Hungary (-0.7%), Latvia (-0.2%), Austria, Poland and Romania. Growth was flat in Italy, sluggish in Germany (0.1%), marked in France (0.4%) and sustained in Spain (0.8%).

Employment. In the third quarter, the number of employed persons increased by 0.2% in the euro area and remained stable in the EU, compared with the previous quarter.

Croatia (+1.5%), Ireland (+1.2%) and Malta (+1.0%) recorded the highest growth of employment, while the highest decreases were seen in Romania (-3.1%), Estonia (-1.2%) and Latvia (-0.6%). (Original version in French by Mathieu Bion)
