Toy Safety Directive - next trilogues to focus on details of banned chemical substances

27/11/2024 (Agence Europe)On Wednesday 27 November, the Hungarian Presidency of the EU Council gave an initial progress report on the trilogue negotiations regarding the Toy Safety Directive (see EUROPE 13232/2) to the permanent representatives of the EU27 (Coreper). One topic of discussion seems to have taken centre stage: the specification of chemical substances banned in toys and their exception rules. The European Parliament has restricted the list of authorised substances, which could complicate the entire toy production chain, according to several Member States. This point in the directive should guide the forthcoming trilogue negotiations, the date of which has not yet been set. The regulation, proposed by the European Commission in July 2023, aims to increase protection against harmful chemical substances and strengthen implementation rules by introducing a new digital passport for the products concerned.
