On Tuesday 26 November, the European Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jutta Urpilainen, announced the strengthening of the partnership between the EU and Gabon through the ‘Global Gateway’ investment plan, following a meeting in Brussels with the President of the Transition in Gabon, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema. The Gabonese Head of State also met the President of the European Council, Charles Michel.
“We discussed the ongoing transition and our support for ensuring an inclusive and democratic process, in line with the announced roadmap”, Mrs Urpilainen said on X.
The discussions focused in particular on the constitutional referendum held on Saturday 16 November, in which 91% of Gabonese voters were in favour of a new constitution.
The leaders also made a commitment to sustainable forest management and signed partnerships in the economic and transport fields. The agreements signed include the allocation of a subsidy for the rehabilitation of the Trans-Gabon railway, according to the Presidency of the Gabonese Republic in a statement.
