25/11/24 (Agence Europe) – Google is to stop displaying results from EU news publishers to 1% of users in Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland and Spain in Google News, Search and Discover for a few weeks as part of a test to enable it to “assess the impact of results from EU news publishers on the search experience of [its] users and on traffic to publishers”, the company announced on Wednesday 13 November, claiming that its Extended News Previews (ENP) programme was in compliance with the European Copyright Directive. But “while [it] complies, regulators and publishers have requested additional data regarding the effect of news content in Search on users’ use of [its] products”. Publishers will know how many visits they missed during the test phase, which is seen as a warning. (FS)
