European plastics manufacturers are lagging behind in reducing use of chemical substances, according to NGO ChemSec

25/11/24 (Agence Europe)On Monday 25 November, the NGO ChemSec published its latest annual ‘ChemScore’ ranking, as the latest round of negotiations to create a ‘Global Plastics Treaty’ gets underway in Busan, South Korea. The NGO revealed that European plastics manufacturers remain at the bottom of the rankings when it comes to the use of hazardous chemicals. The NGO criticises European manufacturers for favouring greenwashing over a real commitment to stopping the use of hazardous chemical substances. Over a quarter of the more than 16,000 chemical substances contained in modern plastics are recognised as hazardous to human health and the environment, according to ChemSec. Each year since 2020, ‘ChemScore’ has ranked the world’s 50 largest state-owned chemical companies. The “wide variations between companies” in the ChemScore index prove, according to the NGO, that they can change their practices. (FS)
