25/11/24 (Agence Europe) – The EU is unlikely to achieve its biodiversity targets by 2030, according to the non-governmental organisation Birdlife Europe, in a report published on Wednesday 20 November. “At the current pace”, said Birdlife, the targets will not be met while “the rate of biodiversity loss continues to increase”. Seen as a success, the regulation on nature restoration (see EUROPE 13433/2) must now be “implemented”. Stronger commitments from the Member States are needed, according to the NGO. In terms of funding, Birdlife has estimated that 1% of the EU budget for 2021-2027 is earmarked for nature conservation, while the EU has announced that it will dedicate 10% of its budget to biodiversity targets in 2026 and 2027. According to the NGO, the agricultural system remains one of the main drivers of biodiversity loss. (Original version in French by Florent Servia)
