European Commission and national authorities call on Temu to comply with European consumer protection legislation

Following an investigation coordinated at European level, the Consumer Protection Cooperation Network (CPC Network) has instructed the online sales platform Temu to comply with EU consumer protection legislation, the European Commission announced on Friday 8 November.

The Network highlights a number of the platform’s practices that infringe EU law, such as false discounts, pressure selling, forced gambling, missing and misleading information, hidden contact details and false reviews.

Temu is still under investigation and has been asked to provide further information to the Network.

The CPC Network is also investigating whether the platform complies with the specific information obligations incumbent on online marketplaces under consumer law.

Temu now has one month to respond to the Network’s findings and propose commitments on how it will address the problems identified. Depending on the response, the Network may enter into a dialogue with the company. If this fails to address the concerns raised, national authorities can take enforcement measures to ensure compliance with the law. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
