08/11/2024 (Agence Europe) – The right of citizens to access diverse sources of reliable information, recognised in the European Media Freedom Act (article 3), came into force on Friday 8 November (see EUROPE 13370/19). In a press release, Reporters Without Borders described this as a “historic step forward”, calling for the Act to be fully implemented by all EU Member States. “At a time when misinformation and malicious foreign interference are proliferating in the EU, this new law (...) provides a legal foundation for the concrete measures that must now be taken by EU Member States in order to preserve the integrity of democratic information spaces”, it added, stating that this includes the “protection for the confidentiality of sources, safeguards for editorial independence and measures to encourage external pluralism” as well as ensuring that citizens are guaranteed access to this reliable information, “no matter which medium is used”.
