On Thursday 7 November in Budapest, the Heads of State or Government of Germany, France, Italy, Poland, Romania and the United Kingdom, together with the Presidents of the European Council and the European Commission, emphasised their “collective determination to support Moldova in the defence of its sovereignty and territorial integrity”.
In a joint statement issued after a meeting with Moldovan President Maia Sandu alongside the meeting of the ‘European Political Community’ (see other news), the leaders welcomed the results of the recent referendum won by those in favour of enshrining EU membership in the Moldovan Constitution (see EUROPE 13508/1), results achieved “despite unprecedented assaults and foreign interferences aiming at undermining the integrity of the electoral process and Moldova’s democratic institutions”.
The leaders strongly condemn these attempts at altering election results through manipulation of information campaigns, corruption and vote buying schemes. “We welcome Moldova’s success in thwarting Russian destabilization efforts and will continue to support its resilience”, they promised (see EUROPE 13509/19).
