European Commission launches a high-level committee to prepare next plan for humanitarian resettlement and readmission in EU

On Thursday 7 November, the European Commission launched a new High-Level Committee on Resettlement and Humanitarian Admission Committee to strengthen the security of access routes to the EU, according to a press release.

Resettlement is an essential humanitarian and protection instrument which provides safe access routes for people seeking protection in the EU. The High Level Committee will contribute to the establishment of a permanent system with the Union’s two-year plan determining the total number of people needing protection to be admitted to the EU and the contribution of each Member State”, it adds.

Under a new regulation adopted on the subject last May as part of the ‘Pact on Migration and Asylum’, the number of admissions to the EU will be decided on a voluntary basis by the Member States on the basis of a proposal from the Commission. The plan should be in place by the end of 2025 and will cover the period 2026-2027.

The Commission can always modify it in the event of a crisis.

Seventeen EU Member States pledged more than 29,000 places for resettlement and humanitarian admission for 2023, including continued and extended support for Afghans in need of protection, the Commission points out.

And as part of the EU’s resettlement and humanitarian admission programme for 2024-2025, 14 EU Member States have provided 61,000 pledges for resettlement and humanitarian admission.

Since 2021, the Member States have also reported almost 47,000 arrivals of people admitted on humanitarian grounds.
