30/10/2024 (Agence Europe) – The European Union activated the emergency service of the Copernicus programme on Wednesday 30 October to monitor the area of south-eastern Spain affected by flooding, the European Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič, said on X. “The civil protection mechanism can be mobilised”, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, declared at the presentation of the Niinistö report. “Europe is ready to help”, she confirmed, pointing out that the floods that have occurred in the EU in recent months demonstrate “the reality of climate change”, which the EU must face up to. Given the scale of the damage, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, thanked “all the emergency services, the fire brigade, local police, civil protection, the armed forces, the national police and the civil guard”.
