On Wednesday 30 October, the NGO coalition Climate Action Network Europe organised a panel of experts to discuss the European Union’s negotiating position ahead of COP29, which takes place from 11 to 22 November in Azerbaijan.
During the discussions, broadcast live on X, the Director of CAN Europe, Chiara Martinelli, called for the EU to maintain the climate emergency as a core priority and to strengthen its leadership by supporting developing countries.
In her view, three key words should guide the EU: emergency, partnership and coherence. She called on the EU to set a firm target of carbon neutrality by 2040, pointing out that “the whole world is looking at the EU leadership to ensure we move forward on the Paris Agreement“.
The discussions also detailed the EU’s decisive role in achieving a just transition, by meeting the adaptation and compensation for loss and damage needs of developing countries, while ensuring that climate financing complies with the polluter pays principle.
