11/10/24 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 11 October, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced at a press conference alongside Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama that the second Intergovernmental Conference with Albania would be held on Tuesday 15 October. This will mark the opening of the first chapter of negotiations with Tirana on the country’s accession to the EU. Speeding up the accession of the Western Balkans is one of the priorities of the Hungarian Presidency: on Wednesday 25 September, in a unanimous decision, the ambassadors of the Member States to the European Union agreed to dissociate the accession process of Albania from that of North Macedonia, to allow Tirana to benefit from its progress. According to one source, the EU also hopes to hold an IGC with North Macedonia this year and open a new chapter with Serbia. (IS)
