08/10/24 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 8 October, the European Commission’s climate change observatory, Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), announced that September 2024 was the second-warmest September ever registered in Europe, with an average temperature 1.74°C above the 1991-2020 average. Only September 2023, with an excess of 2.51°C, was warmer. Temperatures were particularly high in the east and north-east of Europe, while the west of the continent (France, Iberian Peninsula, Iceland) experienced below-average temperatures. Globally, September 2024 recorded a temperature 1.54°C above pre-industrial levels and was the 14th month in a 15-month period in which the average air temperature at the planet’s surface was 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
