Spain wants European Council to take position on Venezuelan crisis

24/09/24 (Agence Europe)On Tuesday 24 September, Spain’s Secretary of State for European Affairs, Fernando Sampedro Marcos, said that his country wanted to “elevate the discussion” on the political crisis in Venezuela to the level of European leaders, who will be meeting in Brussels on 17 and 18 October. On his arrival at the General Affairs Council meeting, he said that Spain was in favour of adopting specific “conclusions” from the European Council and was asking the European Union to take a stand to help find a political solution. From New York, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, had reiterated the previous evening that the EU did not recognise the legitimacy of President Maduro’s re-election (see EUROPE 13471/4). He called for the reopening of the office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Caracas. (MB)
