Trade defence tools protect jobs in EU, says European Commission

Trade defence measures increased by 40% between 2018 and 2023, according to the annual report on trade defence activities for the year 2023, published on Tuesday 24 September by the European Commission. These measures directly protected 500,000 jobs in 2023, according to the report.

182 measures were in place by the end of 2023, of which 156 were anti-dumping duties. Most of them target Chinese products or cases of circumvention of measures targeting China by other countries.

Anti-dumping tariffs often concern materials that are critical to the climate and digital transition. They also impact sectors where SMEs have a strong presence, and are therefore vulnerable, according to the Commission.

This is the case for the ceramic, bicycle and tyre industry. Anti-dumping tariffs on tableware and ceramic tiles from China, India and Turkey alone have saved more than 100,000 jobs in the EU, according to the Commission.
