Alexander Natz, Secretary General of the European Confederation of Pharmaceutical Entrepreneurs (EUCOPE), sent a letter on Tuesday 24 September to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, and the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, in which he advocates the establishment of a competitive and attractive pharmaceutical ecosystem for innovation.
At the start of a new institutional mandate, it is vital to equip Europe’s health and pharmaceutical sectors with the resources they need to meet new challenges and seize new opportunities.
At EUCOPE’s initiative, 23 pharmaceutical companies signed the letter, calling in particular for a solid and predictable legislative framework to encourage and protect intellectual property for all medicines, especially those requiring targeted and riskier investment.
According to EUCOPE, R&D in underserved areas should be increased through support mechanisms for basic research and promoting public-private partnerships between academics, researchers and industry (with the direct involvement of patients).
