On Tuesday 24 September, the major online platforms, including Google, Meta, Microsoft and TikTok, published their fourth series of reports online, detailing their actions to combat the spread of online disinformation in the run-up to the European elections.
These platforms signed the Code of Practice on Disinformation last June (see EUROPE 13379/8) and committed to moderate threats that could disrupt the smooth running of the election period via their networks.
On the whole, and in line with the recent findings of the EDPB, the European elections were spared massive destabilisation or disinformation campaigns (see EUROPE 13463/4). Some platforms, such as Google, report having a range of measures in place, from reporting AI-powered content to real-time aggregation of voting results across the EU.
These reports are accompanied by a series of structural indicators that provide an overview of the prevalence of online disinformation and its impact during the election period.
The impact of generative AI and the measures taken to counter any ‘fake news’ disseminated through it are also included in the reports.
