23/09/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 23 September, the NGO CAN Europe published, by way of reminder, an information note to stress the importance of implementing the regulation on nature restoration, which was formally adopted by the Council in June 2024 (see EUROPE 13433/2). While the NGO welcomes the adoption of this legislation, which aims in particular to restore 20% of land and sea by 2030, it deplores a number of shortcomings, noting for example that most restoration efforts have been postponed until 2040 or even 2050. These deadlines do not reflect the urgency of the situation, according to the NGO, which adds that the final version of the national restoration plans will not be ready “for another three years”. More problematically, the legislation was watered down under pressure from “conservative MEPs and agricultural lobbies” and “does not provide for enforcement measures in the event of non-compliance”.
