On Sunday 22 September, President of the European Council Charles Michel pledged the EU’s support for the ‘Pact for the Future’, adopted that same day at the United Nations ‘Summit of the Future’. The pact, which aims to build a “better future“ for humanity, has been signed by 193 countries.
“Finding the best way to tackle our common challenges is the shared mission of our generation. This summit is a unique moment to boost our ambition. And the European Union is fully on board”, explained Mr Michel in a speech at the summit. He called for a pact that would “reinvigorate multilateral trust and put the United Nations back at the heart of our actions“.
“This pact is a powerful catalyst for accelerating our Sustainable Development Goals and to make progress on human rights, gender equality and protecting our planet”, he emphasised, also stressing support for developing countries.
The pact sets out 56 measures, including sustainable development, international peace and security and the transformation of global governance.
