18/09/24 (Agence Europe) – Hungary had until 17 September to pay the European Union €200 million in respect of a lump-sum fine imposed by the Court of Justice of the European Union for failing to comply with a December 2020 ruling on the management of migration flows (see EUROPE 13474/13). On Wednesday 18 September, the European Commission confirmed that it would initiate a compensation procedure, which will be reflected in the share of the EU budget allocated to Hungary. Hungary had until 13 September to prove that the Court’s ruling on migrants’ right to asylum had been complied with. If there is no news, the Commission will send an initial request for payment. The penalty payment of €1 million per day from the publication of the CJEU ruling on Thursday 13 June had risen to €93 million by 18 September. Hungary has 45 days in which to pay. (FS)
