18/09/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 18 September, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, called on Georgia to withdraw its legislation on ‘family values and the protection of minors’, adopted the previous day by the Georgian Parliament. According to Mr Borrell, this package of laws, deemed to be anti-LGBTIQ+, will “undermine citizens’ fundamental rights and increase discrimination and stigmatisation”, and says it is “further derailing the country from its EU path”. At the beginning of September, the spokesman for the European External Action Service deplored the “hasty” adoption of this legislative package at second reading and called for it not to be definitively adopted (see EUROPE 13475/20).
